Our quality of Maritime Pine grows only in a specific region of Portugal, considered by timber experts through the ages as the finest species of all pines. The low rainfall and the sandy soil combined with the morning sea mists in this area means the trees do not swell with water - instead they are dense with resin, giving them strength, weight and a remarkable hardness for a pine.
Portugese Maritime Pine is one of nature's most beautiful materials. The Victorians used it extensively in Great Britain and elsewhere because of its rich colour, strength and hardness. It only fell out of use because of WWII when it was too difficult to ship it over to England. But now it is being revived worldwide as a superior pine for many applications. Coalport Pine Company is at the forefront of this movement.

Notice the quality of these saw-cut edges. The polished effect on the right-hand piece of Cerne demonstrates a harder, denser wood. At up to 1,000kg per cubic metre this is heavier than European Oak.
Only the most select maritime pine trees offer such quality in a pine.
Portugese Maritime Pine is undoubtedly pine in appearance, yet more colourful than the lighter weight Baltic, Swedish , Norwegian and Noth American pines. Less knotty than the American Cedars, Pitch and Yellow pines. Less sinewy and stronger than French Bordeaux Maritime Pine. It is an ideal material for decorative wooden flooring. It is also a heavier wood providing superior sound insulation.
We only air dry the cut timbers then take great care acclimatising it as it travels and arrives in the UK. Although it takes longer, air drying produces a timber of much superior texture and quality with fewer splits.
